CheaperGen vs OpenRouter

OpenRouter Alternative

Independent comparison · Not affiliated with or endorsed by OpenRouter.

For developers who use OpenRouter's image and video endpoints — Seedance, Veo, Kling, Wan, FLUX — and want the same official models for less. CheaperGen is built for video and images: one API, an MCP server and a Studio, below list price. For language models, OpenRouter remains the broader choice.

Who it's for

CheaperGen or OpenRouter?

OpenRouter is a unified API for more than 500 language models from 80+ providers, which also offers image and video generation endpoints. CheaperGen is narrower on purpose: the labs' video and image models, below their list price, through one API. Here's an honest take on when each fits.

Choose CheaperGen if

  • You run Seedance 2.0, Kling 3.0 and Veo 3.1 or other models in the table below and want the same models for less.
  • You'd rather not pay a fee when you add credits, and want credits that never expire.[1][2]

Stay with OpenRouter if

  • You mainly need language models: 500+ models from 80+ providers on one OpenAI-compatible API, with model fallbacks.[1][3]
  • You bring your own provider keys (BYOK), or want its TypeScript, Python and Go SDKs.[4][5]
  • You want images back in the same request: its image endpoint is synchronous.[6]

Only models where CheaperGen is lower are listed, and only when OpenRouter isn't cheaper at any tier both publish. OpenRouter: its public pages, October 21, 2026 (OpenRouter's video prices are read from its public model endpoints; Seedance is billed in video tokens, converted at 16:9); ours are live. Video at 16:9. Prices change — check before you buy.

“Official” is the lab's own API price for the model; open-weights models have none.

Rows marked “open weights” are open-weights models: the same released weights, not a lab's API.

How the prices are lower

The same models, lower prices — here's how

No smaller models and no hidden fees: three things on our side.

01

Official partnerships

Direct partnerships with the official model labs give us their best partner pricing on their official models.

02

Our own GPU inference

For open-source models, our own GPU inference — optimized kernels, warm pools and per-model tuning — makes generation several times faster and lowers the cost further.

03

Automatic routing

Every request is routed automatically to fast, cost-effective capacity, with live health checks and failover.

Migration guide

Move from OpenRouter in four steps

The same request on both platforms. Only the URL, the auth header and a few field names change.

  1. 01

    Create a key

Sign in, create an API key in the dashboard and add credits.

  2. 02

    Change the endpoint

POST to /api/v1/run/{endpoint} with Authorization: Bearer.

  3. 03

    Map the inputs

Fields are flat in the body. Each model's API page has its JSON Schema.

  4. 04

    Read the result

Poll GET /api/v1/generations/{id} or pass webhook_url.

FAQ

OpenRouter Alternative questions

On the 20 models compared here, yes — and OpenRouter isn't cheaper at any tier both platforms list for them. For example, Seedance 2.0 at 720p is $0.1356/s here against $0.1512/s on OpenRouter (10% lower). OpenRouter's prices are from its public pages on October 21, 2026; ours are live. We only list models where we're lower, so check OpenRouter's pricing for models not shown.

Yes — the labs' official models (Seedance, Kling, Veo, Wan, MiniMax, FLUX, Nano Banana and more), not look-alikes or smaller versions, and for open-weights models (FLUX.2 [klein] 4B and FLUX 3 Image Klein) the same released weights. The lower price comes from direct partnerships with the labs, our own GPU inference for open-source models and automatic routing. Accelerated builds of open-weight models are labelled as such.

Usually an afternoon: create a key, point your requests at POST /api/v1/run/{endpoint} with a Bearer token, map the input fields (the schema is on each model's API page) and read the result by polling GET /api/v1/generations/{id} or with a webhook. The migration guide above shows the same request on both.

No. The price is held from your balance when you submit and returned in full if the generation fails, or if you cancel it while it's still queued. Credits never expire and work across the API, the MCP server and the Studio.

CheaperGen focuses on video and image models. For language models, OpenRouter's catalog is far broader — many teams keep it for text and use CheaperGen for media.

No. Everything you add goes to your balance, and credits never expire. OpenRouter's pricing page lists a 5.5% fee on pay-as-you-go credit purchases.

Yes. Many teams use more than one platform — for example OpenRouter for language models, and CheaperGen for the video and image models where it costs less. There's no subscription or commitment: you pay per second of video or per image.
